MY FAVOURITE BOOK and its review

TITLE : The English Teacher

AUTHOR :R.K.Narayan

PUBLISHER :Indian Thought Publications

PAGES :183

MY RATING :5/5

BLURB :The story is about the adventures of a man called Krishna who is an English teacher in a college far away from his hometown. His life is mundane and work filled but everything changes when his wife Susila and his 5 year old daughter Leela comes to live with him.The first few months are filled with excitement and a lot of clutter as the author describes how Krishna writes poems in praise of his wife’ beauty, how they appoint a nanny for Leela and how they go house hunting in the city. But happiness is short lived, as Susila is affected by typhoid.Krishna runs around day and night to cure his bed ridden wife. This is when Leela grows more attached to Krishna. But unfortunately Susila meets death as the doctors fail miserably and are unable to cure her. After Susila’s death Krishna thinks of suiciding but is unable to at the sight of his Leela.Things go bizarre one day when Krishna receives a letter from a headmaster who says that he has been in touch with Susila and that she wants to talk to him. From then on its Krishna who daily leaves to the headmasters house to talk to Susila when Leela leaves to school.

MY REVIEW :The story is logically unacceptable, as people who think with their brain find it rather hard to believe that Krishna can talk to his wife who passed away. But for people like me who think from the heart, it makes sense.I believe this is true. How ones soul remains alive even after their death and it is the soul here that talked to Krishna. The book brings out the authors brilliant style of writing which fooled me into thinking that the impossible is possible.Yes, this is only possible by someone like Sir Narayan who can put something ordinary and daily into a high pedestal to live on its own.Beautifully written, engaging, emotionally soothing, it can make you cry and laugh at the same time. This is a must read.Is it rude to say that there is no point in living if you don’t read this book? 🙂
